First of all a few corrections:

PC specs:

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Hyper Threaded 2.80 Ghz
RAM: 2560 MB, (not 1024)
GPU: NVidia 6200 GeForceFX 256 MB, (not 128)

I have found out that the Reavers site consumes a staggering 60-80% of my CPU capacity, thanks to all the flash on there. Turning off the Reavers site while playing the game, reduces my CPU usage to a comfortable 30-40%, even 20% when I completely switch off Chrome. So for me this problem seems sorted. However there seem to be others having the same issue still.

Apart from that, I would still appreciate it if someone could tell me a little bit more about:

* Hyper Threading: what does it do, does it influence my computer performance in a positive or negative way, and how to go about switching it off if needed;

* 'Page files': What are they and what do they do. Strail posted a remark in his reply which made me think my computer's performance could be improved if I were to let Windows 'run my page file'. I don't know how to do that though.

By the way Strail: I checked my NVidia settings in the control panel, and every option is set to its highest value. And still I am not experiencing anything out of the ordinary when I run the game with Chrome turned off.

The advantages of Hyper-Threading are listed as: improved support for multi-threaded code, allowing multiple threads to run simultaneously, improved reaction and response time.[quote]

So, if the program doesnt have multi-threaded code, its a waste of time. Most games and programs today DO NOT have multi threaded code, this is because you have to physically code mulithreaded behaviour, its not done by the programmer pressing an "optimise" button. Multithreaded code, enables the real use of multi core technology - i.e. having multiple threads running with different cores.

Page file = its like virtual memory that the Operating system uses - heres a link Tweaking Page Files and info

Thanks, that was quite helpful. Now about hyper threading: if I were to turn it off somehow, would I generally improve my performance?

As i mentioned, I dont use hyperthreading. You should be able to disable it in the bios (On / Off). It wont damage anything or cause you any problems.

I suggest you re-boot, turn it off and spend a day with it off, then re-boot and spend a day with it on and see if you see any differences yourself. Keep in mind that there may be other programs you use that might benefit from it, but TBH, whenever I give HT another go, i dont see any benefit, so I leave it off.

These "CPU usage" and "lag" problems are very interesting for me.
I have been using my new computer for almost a year (since 2008 January) which is not a small one:

OS: WinXP SP2
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo CPU E6550 @2.33GHz
MainBoard: ASUSTek Computer INC P5K
Videocard: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT
Memory: 2048 MB.

My "CPU usage" is never too much, it is true, but I have "lag" problem for a lot of time, and in this time other players have the same problem.
There are long-long time when the server is absolutely correct, (there is no any lag), but other times it is impossible to fight against each-others and npc-s. Weps don't cause damage on others and npcs, and every moving objetcts (npcs and human players) jumping to and fro in the screen.
We tested other servers (NSU, HHC) in these times, but we don't experienced these problems.

My old computer under VOID v2112 mod before a year:
My old computer was a very small one:

OS: WinXP SP2
CPU: 1.00 GHz (!!!)
Main Board: (I don't remember)
Videocard: Nvidia GeForce II Titanium
Memory: 256 MB (!!!)

It was a very small computer that I often feel, that v2112 mod vas much-mush better playable with this computer, than
v2115 mod with this new, big one.
At the end: I am not a big computer professional, but I am sure, that these "lag" problems aren't computer problem (or incorrect computer setup problem) of the players.

Hi Kosztya m8. :)

I used to have my internet browser open on the background. I always have two tabs open: the Void site, and the Reavers site. Now I have found that the Reavers site consumes something like 60-80% of my cpu capacity. When I turn off the internet browser, my cpu usage falls back to a nice 20%.

Maybe you can doublecheck if you have any other programs running in the background. You might also wanna check your autostart list and switch off a few not important programs, since sometimes a lot of programs are running in the background without you even knowing it. And all these little processes can eat up your cpu capacity.

Hi Mav  :)  !
I tryed a lot of thing when this "lag" appeared.
One of my best friend is the head admin on the NSU server (Olympos EU). His name here is [RAPTORS]_RJO, he is an active player in VOID-server as well.
As I said I am not a big computer-man, but he knows computers very well. Helping of him we tried everithing when this "lag" problems appeared in the VOID v2115 mod, but nothing happened (we controlled our computer, we turned on/off a lot of possiblities in our computer, and - beside it - it is a generar technical topic in the RAPTORS forum, what can cause this lag in the VOID.
But other hand  (and it is important) when lag problem appeares in the VOID all player begin to complain it.

Thx for your information, I will see again what you have written.
I think of that opening of this topic was an excellent idea, I follow it from your first comment, and we discuss those things what Strail (and other ones) proposed.
I hope that we will resolve this irritating problem soon, and I am sure, that VOIDserver will be the best FLserver all of them!
