Freelancer - The Void

"we will rape you to death, eat your flesh and sow your skin onto our clothes. And if you're very very lucky, we will do it in that order..."

This is a quote from the TV Program Firefly and from the Movie Serenity. It is a description of the Reavers in these films. The -=REAVERS=- clan is loosely based on those characters.......driven mad by some unknown force, almost primal in our desire to kill, we will eat our victims... and in fact it makes for fun RP writing... as well as do all the other gruesome things said about us in the films.

That's in our RP. Actually we're a pretty fun bunch. We see the difference between the game and the community and try to not take things too seriously in the game. But we do take some things a little more seriously in the community, since we all have to "live" together. We don't want to offend players. But we are an RP clan and we do want to play it to the hilt. Holding that slogan is part of it. It's a game. Our RP is how we play it.

So I have a question. It has been suggested that the above quote is offensive. I disagree. It's a quote from a movie that's rated PG-13... not a restrictive rating at all. Most players here are over 13. If we were to gauge the level of maturity of the playing population by that I'd say the slogan is safe. But I want to know what you all feel about it.

So I am asking for your opinions. Is it offensive to you? Do you think it's offensive to others? Should it be removed? I really want to know, as Watchwolf/Manticore... not as Admin. And I think I'll put one of those poll thingys on this topic, helps people see where this is going before they read all the posts.

Thanks for your input. Keep it clean. I prefer to see no flames. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I am asking for frank discussion and honest opinion. I especially want to hear from the ladies in the Void, since it has been suggested that it is the ladies who are/would be offended.

Offensive? Nah!

It's from a PG-13 series, and Freelancer is rated 15, at least by European standards. So really, it's not even a problem by law.

Useless trivia: my copy of Freelancer, distributed in Spain, is rated for ages 18 up. That had me all the game expecting to see some [Yuni + Trent + playful Nomad tentacles] scene, but only brought disappointment :-w

Its okay.

Now if this had been only 2 years ago then things may have been different,as we used to have many more kids and teens earlier,but we are now a more 'older community'.

I enjoyed the hell out of that series.
First time, was not convinced, but after a misunderstanding i had with MAV,
i decided to give it a second chance, and watched it again.

My understandinf there is that they attacked anything that moved.
Ruthless, blood thirsty killers. Flesh eaters...and so on.
Giving your RP and the actions in space, I think that you guys
should find a more specific term for the "you" part,
so the guys on your side not to be offended.

I dont know where the complaint originated - so whoever voiced it seems to have gone quiet.  That is a shame.
Whoever voiced it is free to speak up and present an argument as to why this particular phrase offends them.

Remember, offense is the perception of what is said or presented - to you or I it may seem mild and harmless but to someone who has lived through such a trauma it is not in any way shape or form "inoffensive".  We dont use the term during our RP - that would be inappropriate, it is just part of our "headline" in order to introduce the RP of the clan taken from the series Firefly and the movie Serenity.

Im biased - so I want it to stay  - but if you can come up with a reasoned and sound argument for it to be removed then please state your case.
