CPU usage when playing FL Void - feedback for A-Team
Lately I have noticed an increase in CPU usage while playing Void. It used to be around 70%, now it's close to 95% and hits the 100 mark when I have so much as an internet site opened in the background.
The in game result are a stagnating image flow, or 'screen lag' as some like to refer to it.
My Specs:
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Hyper Threaded 2.80 Ghz
RAM:1024 MB
GPU: NVidia 6200 GeForceFX 128 MB
As you can see I do not have the most highly spec-ed computer, but a 2.8 Ghz cpu should not have too much trouble running the game. And I am sure there are quite some people with less high specs than even me.
The FAQ has also had some requests for help from players experiencing the same problem. For now we advice to turn off all other programs and any CPU-eating processes in the task manager, but it seems that CPU usage has increased a great deal over the last time.
I was hoping that maybe players who have the same problem post it here along with their computer specs, so we can provide the A-Team with a bit of feedback.

Re: CPU usage when playing FL Void - feedback for A-Team
Specs:
OS: XP Professional SP2
CPU: Intel Celeron 2.4 GHz
RAM: 1.25 GB
GPU: ASUS RADEON A9200SE 128MB
Experiencing the same thing, but ... 100% cpu usage only while playing the game. When alt+tab cpu is back to 2-5%.
"Screen lag" happens from time to time when i log in to VOID. I just restart FL (sometimes more than 1 restart) and lag disappears.
When Windows starts i turn off explorer in task manager. This action closes all unnecessary services. Than i start explorer via run command in task manager, and manualy start antivirus. After that when everything settles i start VOID.
Lag appeared with new mod, so i noticed that this helps a bit.
If anyone advises me to turn off antivirus, i will not do that because my pc was "violated" back when i was listening everyone who said to turn it off.
Hope it will help.
Cheers.

Freelancer doesnt benefit from hyperthreading, so you may want to turn that off.
In fact i run an old dual cpu 3.0GHZ xeon and disable hyperthreading in the bios. It does nothing for me regards Freelancer. You may also want to look at your page files, as running 1 GB of RAM, you should allow windows to manage your page file.
Im running xp pack 3
I also run 6200 GE force and running driver vers 178.13, Do you have the "nvidia control panel"? i can check some values with you there.
The fact that freelancer is running and utilising high cpu usage shouldnt be a concern in itself, if its having to run hogh cpu usage to compensate for graphic elements then that needs investigating.
In the meantime, feel free to post specs of pc's with issues.

Cool.
I didn't know that Hyper Threading could be turned off and how to do it, so if it's having a bad influence on the way FL is running, please fill me in about how to go about it.
I also don't know what 'page files' are and what they do, but the way you put it it sounds like there could be an improvement if I were to let Windows 'run my page file'. I might need some help with this as well.
Yes I do have the 'NVidia control panel'. Let me know what setting to change and I'll sort it.
Thanks for your quick response. I am off for some X-mas family visits now, but will check in when I get back.

Re: CPU usage when playing FL Void - feedback for A-Team
I'm having exactly the same problem. I start the game and usage shoots up to 100%.
xp pro service pack 2
amd athlon 64 3200+ 2.1ghz
nvidia gforce 6800
1024 ram
I've found, may yet prove to be a fluke, that if when you start the game up, once you get to the erver list, you leave it for a minute without joining it seems to prevent it. Although as I said it may have been a fluke.

Re: CPU usage when playing FL Void - feedback for A-Team
Hi.
I also got this CPU problem. Sometimes when i got the CPU usage and trying to quit i actually had to restart the computer. I heard someone saying that it had to do with a memory leak. And, when you look in the task manager FL's exe gets bigger and bigger i noticed. starting from around 119.000 Kb and rising with 10-20kb. Could it be that the servers are still loading while in the game? Because waiting until all the servers are loaded and waiting 10 seconds after and then connecting to the void seems to solve this problem. Im not so smart with computers and due that i don't know the specs of my comp as well...

Re: CPU usage when playing FL Void - feedback for A-Team
Hey nomad:
Go to the 'My computer' icon on your desktop
Click your right mouse button on it and select 'properties' (the most lower option)
Hit the left tab.
You will see the specs of your computer OS (operating system) displayed on the top, like your Windows version and Edition, and the Service Pack version.
On the bottom of that window you will see the specs of your CPU (your processor), the version of it, the capacity etc.
I can't recall where you can find your RAM size, but I bet it's at least over 512 MB.
Maybe someone else knows where to find that for you m8.

If your not sure about you couputers specs, just d/l a program called cpuz. Just google it. Very good program and shows you everything about your specs including ram latencies.

Np Nomad.
Hey Timma, that's a pretty cool prog, thanks. Something funny:
I knew I had 4 DDR slots, but I thought they were 4 x 256 MB. Now CPuz tells me that I have 2x 1024 and 2x 256 MB?... Does that actually mean I have 2560 MB of RAM? Because that's exactly what it says under 'Memory'.
However, when I check computer properties though, it only shows 1024 MB. Weird...

Re: CPU usage when playing FL Void - feedback for A-Team
I didn't expect to see a lot of CPU usage on my rig and there wasn't. Although I have stopped playing in on the Alienware cuz it's got Vista and it was a PITA. But on the Dell here's what I got:
OS: XP Pro sp3
Processor: Q6850 Quad @ 3.00
Mem: 4G DDR2 @ 800
CPU usage: At start-up it spiked to about 40% but then it settled down to about 25. When I connected to the server it went up to about 30 for as moment then back to about 25 and stayed there.
