Lets think about it.

Post by anoyingnomad »

Hello all, you might know who i am. You might not. Don't go like, ''its a flame!!!'' because i am posting it. Please read everything. And if you got a problem on the way its done, my PM box is open ;)

First off, i think we need some change. Well, who doesnt? Theres alot of simple things being forgotten. Just one of them is the Readme. Its not entirely forgotten, but its not complete. It needs a install manual for FLMM haters. Like me :D. It certainly is better to put the mod on Fl yourself if your on vista or win7. As FLMM doesn't work proper most of the time. Or if you forget ''run as admin'' and all that stuff.

Secondly, we got a FAQ team. Sure is helpfull but i'd rather think to put a commody in a new players cargohold with the intro and info and all that. As the starting message is easy to miss. Also, we had a topic on this one. But we need universal chat for everyone. It has more advantages then disadvantages. Just think of it. You're new and want some help. But who are you gonna talk to? Maybe the FAQ is afk. And you have no idea who could help. But you have read in the welcome message that you can use uni chat. You'll just shout a message to everyone. There will be someone kind enough to help you.

It can hardly be annoying to have everyone on 1 chat. As there is hardly any people on the server these days. No offence. Freelancer gets old. But if it will be there, there should also be a mute for uni chatters. For those that really hate being social ;)
Also, i think that the people who made this mod should give their own opinion on stuff. Don't go like ''ohh well they want it we make it''.
Maybe we want it, but is it good for the mod and the community? All kinds of things that can improve The Void.

We need something special. That no other server has. It will attract people to check it out. And maybe they like playing here more then on their past server. Thats another new community member! :)  Spoken about new members, why shouldn't we inform old ones? Were is that Void newsletter gone to? Certainly alot of the near 10.000 people that are registered here would come back. You'd have a full server again. We would need more cap like disco.

Another point, we need more clear server rules. Not that the ones are clear enough. But they are , well, to simple. And alot of it is outdated.

So, lets think about it how we can improve this place. All written in pink just to let everyone know i mean no hate towards anyone. I just hope we can keep The Void alive and fun.

Excuse my spelling. Im an Hollander you know. Again don't see this as a flame. And dont abandon it after you read it. Give your opinion. Also Admins and dev team give your opinion and ideas. We are a community after all, we gotta make it fun together

Well that was my longest post ever. And it isn't even that long :-?  And i got nothing more to add. I think. Thats why i want your opinion and ideas.

This is the second thread in the RP discussion section that's not RP at all. Just saying :P

A manual on how to do an installation by hand? Well, that's easy, I can write one up for you right now. Ahem.
"Don't do manual installation if you want to easily switch to other mods too, that's what FLMM was made for. Do this only at your own risk, and don't come to us with questions please if something was broken.
Rename the .flmod file to .zip, uncompress it to your Freelancer folder, overwriting the existing files there. Run the Void as normal. Enjoy!"
I do believe that's all :P Or did I miss something?

I believe everything was said that was needed to be said on the topic of universal chat. As AlphaWolf has said, compared to the considerable amount of time and effort that would be required to implement it securely (so that it couldn't be abused), it wouldn't give much in return, so it's not going to happen.
Even by this example, I believe there's hardly any case of "ohh well they want it we make it" :P Many people want different things, and many of those things wouldn't be feasible to implement. Still, it's always good to have some suggestions, because from time to time we do come across ones which can be considered good, and might even make it in. So, I have two pieces of advice for everyone: if you have some ideas that you think are good, feel free to post them! My second one is to avoid telling anyone what they should do, however. Trying to order people around won't go well.

Besides,at the end of the day, it's not the mod that's going to make or break this place, but the community itself. Think about that for a moment: why would devs be working on the mod, server staff on running the server, policing players, various teams working on their respective stuff, all of them for free(!), if what they see when they come on here would be different players blaming each other and flaming, instead of trying to do something for the Void, or at least having fun on it without having fun at someone else's expense? If the community will go completely to crap, either the staff or the devs (or even both) will move on and do something else, and then there'll be no future for the Void. It's been close to happening a number of times already (and not just in the distant past), so do please think about what you can do for the Void.

A commodity with infos in it for new players would probably be a good idea, though, and it could be done easily. I have a question for y'all, though: what exactly do you think should be written in there?

Oh yeah, the newsletter wasn't here, though there was a mass email sent out when the piracy rule was changed, and afaik that did attract some veterans back to check things out. Not sure how much good that would do if it were to be done again, but hey, it never hurts to try... but there's one question, though: who would write the newsletter? :P (And what should be in it?)

Excuse me for the wrong section, its late here :x

For the manual, thats exactly what i did, and it still failed to launch for some odd reason. Probably my fault, again its late lol.

The uni chat brings more then you think actually. Just take a look on Flak 88, hamburg, and others who have it. Its not copieing, its smart.

About the mod team etc, nothing to add. You got it there.

What the commody should have? Everything whats on that green piece of txt when you log in. And maybe abit more. But ill think of that tomorrow/ I need to sleep. Same thing for the newsletter. But by the way, did you send a newsletter with the piracy change? I never recieved an email of the void besides pass recovery (lol).

I am not going to say much compared to my usual standards.

Regarding the  Commodity with Server Rules, first draft new rules. Open a discussion thread on it and after 1 week with everybody putting in their ideas, the admins should incorporate feasible ideas and completely change the server rules to promote and regulate RP in changed scenario of Void.

/u chat is awesome but it is not going to happen. We have to live with that till there are more developers assisting AlphaWolf, who could then rethink on it. But for now its not going to happen.

Community Newsletter is a good idea. Strail used to send them once in a while(maybe once a year so that it wold not be considered as spamming). The newsletter was pretty good, gave all info and news, and it had a lot of pics and SS.
Only vector-x can make and send it.
We can only write things for it. The best bet is to send it for the release of the new mod.

The commody also should contain hints on how to start proper here.

I don't think Alpha will let anyone work on FLAC. If there even are people that know how to work with it.

Oyeah, just the standart people posting there ideas, as always. 72 views and 5 replies? Common people we need your thoughts!!!

There are 10000+ registered members but I am not sure if a newsletter will bring them back. If someone is deciding to leave a XY game or mod whatever he/she has a reason becouse imo if for example I like these mod I will never leave it definitelly simply couse I like it  :D And in other hand I have bad experince ingame or in forums then I will never return. The exaple can be a not named mod where I played, I was registered on the forums then after 2 weeks I got bored and left definitelly. They can send me 500 newsletters about the new version of that mod whatever I will never play that mod again.

"I don't think Alpha will let anyone work on FLAC. If there even are people that know how to work with it."

Not correct.  In fact I have said no such thing.  If someone knows what they're doing and wants to help with the development they're welcome to, as long as Vector-X signs off on the work being implemented.  He's the boss overall.

As far as my concern goes, I will ensure that any work that is done is done to the appropriate standard and does not cause problems for the server.

If there are any .Net developers (I tend to deal with C# but handle other languages aswell) that are interested in learning about developing plugins to work with the FLAC libraries, I'm willing to help them learn.  I do have to note that due to time constraints I will not be able to teach someone from scratch, i.e.: teach them to program in the first place.

I understand, but what i meant that not some new guy that registered 1 day ago could get there hands on FLAC. And just were my thoughts.

Though i do not know anyone besides 1 who knoes that kind of coding. But already notified me he doesn't want to help here.

@Alpha

Is FLAC Object Oriented or old school ?

I have some background in C++, C#(just getting used to it) and some Java, AS, etc. I can learn pretty fast if its needed ;)

The FLAC libraries for plugins are written in C# and are object-oriented.  FLAC itself is a combination of object-oriented C++ (for the hook dlls) and C# (for the GUI and libraries).  As a plugin developer the libraries are available for interaction with FLAC.

We're getting a little off-topic overall.  If you have any questions about FLAC please feel free to drop me a PM and I'll be happy to answer them there.
