Howdy
Just discovered the multiplayer universe of Freelancer. Never finished the original campaign, but thought this would be a more fun place to spend my time than in single player.
I was a big fan of Wing Commander back in the day. Once I got WC Privateer I really liked it and from there stumbled onto Freelancer. I put it down and only recently came back to it. My interest in the game was picked up again after seeing ads for EVE.
I've been tooling around the NY system mostly the past couple of days. I have to say, its a bit overwhelming figuring out what ship to buy and what weapons to get. There were less choices in the single player mode.
Strangely enough, my credit count soared overnight. It went from about 1Mil to over 5Mil. My account doesn't get interest does it?
A lot of hard work seems to have gone into making the Void much bigger than the first game. I appreciate all the work that has gone into it. It will give me more to explore.
I'm looking forward to interacting with some other players in game. For now, I'm just trying to build up some $$$$ so I can get some hardware that won't get me killed so easily in the game. The computer ships are tougher than the single player game.
Are there any Wiki's or documentation that gives comparisons/reviews of ships and weapons? I haven't been able to find any yet.
In the mean time, I'd enjoy hearing from anyone while I'm playing. My character's name is Anvilhead
Good Luck
Jason

Welcome to the Void. There is no up to date public database of the mod contents that I know of. The thing about the Void is it beckons the explorer, learning about the new stuff is part of the experience.
Also, the campaign is awesome, you're missing out.

ah iv seen you roaming around ingame
good luck on the void, we like to think were the best community around for freelancer, nice freindly bunch of people (we do have those that bite though hehe)
If you run into any major trouble feel free to ask the [ADMIN], [VOID] server staff. [FAQ] are ingame to help you as well
(Frequantly asked questions)
Good luck!!!
See you in space!

Oh! so you're Anvilhead. Wellcome to the Void m8. :)
Yeah, there's a lot to see, explore and test. If you're "oldstyled" then pick a BIG piece of paper (better a noteboook) and start writing your own database. If not, you can create that database with Excel or Calc. Much better.
Anyway, asking other players ingame is many times the best option. But there's nothing compared to the pleasure of discovering things by yourself.
Cya'n space!!

Nice lengthy Intro!
Welcome to Void! People will be more than happy to help you out in-game. As it appears to me that a generous soul transferred some credits to you and you didn't notice it.

Re: Word
Wow, well thank you so very much to who ever it was that was so generous as to give me some credits to get me on my way. I used them to buy a bigger cargo ship so I can make credits for my characters and buy bigger and better stuff.
So I need to finish the solo game I guess then. I tried and the saved games are gone. Do I need to change something in the MOD manager to get back to the original settings?
Meanwhile, I'm getting hammered by the computer controlled characters. I can't even make it out of the NY system. I just bought a Tomahawk VHF ship. Will this be sufficient to get me started? I've noticed it doesn't turn very well.
How do I know which guns to choose between as far as ones that are for gravitron or particle shields? Do I just buy both? And how do I figure out which shields my enemy is using? Just experience?
Thanks
Jason

[quote="geromix";p="228044"] a generous soul transferred some credits to you
-Geromix[/quote]
I'm quite surprised that someone transfering cash (5-10 millions) like it was nothing is considered a "generous soul".
Try to imagine a situation in wich you start playing a new game but instead of starting from 0 and earn cash to get higher ranked you get it for free without any effort put into it or time spent playing. How's that going to encourage ingame activity?
But this does not come as a surprise to me given the fact that currently you can get ranked 90 (1.1 billions) in 24 here on the voidserver.
If i would go to another freelancer server and ask for 5 mill the outcome would be definately a different one.
Commands like /sendcash and /bank should be gotten rid off because they are only abused and encourage lazyness.
I'm sure the intentions of the player sending the cash were good but in my opinion the outcome will be bad.(this has happened to me aswell - people throw around with credits like it was nothing)
@p2ranger:Welcome to the Void
Instead of finishing the storyline you should rather consider joining a clan here on the Void to get introduced to the atmosphere
good luck and have fun

Re: Word
Welcome!
You found Freelancer after ads for EVE Online? Heh :P Things are markedly different here: a lot smaller player base, different servers, but most importantly, there's a lot less grinding and you can actually control your spaceship, not just click here and there :D
I know plenty of people here who haven't played the SP campaign, yet are still very good at pvp. To be honest, if you want to be good at combat, it doesn't matter if you finished it or not: fighting the computer (in pre-arranged situations) is a lot different than fighting players. If you have the time, though, I'd still recommend that you play through it: it's quite entertaining, and you'll learn a lot about Freelancer's backstory and Sirius along the way.
Oh yeah, if you want to play through the SP campaign, however, you'll have to deactivate the Void mod in the mod manager: SP has effectively been disabled in it.
Posting spoilers is generally frowned upon here, so there's no publicly available documentation or wikis detailing Void-specific data.
You can figure out what shields your enemy is using by scanning their ship :P People tend to use brigandine shields though, simply because they come back online the fastest, and that's pretty much what matters the most in pvp. You might want to choose your guns to be those that do the most damage to those shields, but generally speaking, people choose their weapons to fit which fighting style they use: in that case, the refire rate is what's most important. When making a setup, you'll probably want to pay attention that their projectile speeds are matching: a difference of 50-100 m/s is managable, but mixing, say, 800 m/s guns with 1000 m/s ones can seriously mess with your aim. There are popular "builds", but you'll have to try out different setups to find out which one suits you the most anyway :P

Yep, the Tomahawk is a flying brick. I'd say that the most versatile VHF ship here is the Anubis Mk2.
Weapons setup will depend on your ship, and weapons setup for pvp will depend on your style of fighting. So, you'll have to test and test. Just explore and try.
And I'd avoid pvp fights until you got a looot of practice npc killing.

Re: Word
Hehe, don't listen to Hash's last piece of advice, killing NPCs prepares you for real combat about as much as playing pool would prepare you for soccer: you have to hit a round, mostly-white sphere in both cases, but the similarities end there :P Okay, that was a quite stupid metaphor. Anyway, the main point is that players fly in completely different ways than NPCs do. Killing some NPCs is good for some aim training, but that's about it.
Better to ask some players to have some arranged fights with you, and ask for their advice: that'll help you a lot more than hours of farming NPCs would.

Rofl, I said that because he told he has problems with keys (or so I understood). In pvp he has not to press keys, it has to be a direct link mind-ship. If you waste 0.01s thinking what key to press you're dead. So better, practice with npcs.
Of course npc killing and pvp is as diff. as a dishwasher and a guitar.
