UK ISP's; Recommendations please!

Post by Feisty »

(Repost)

OK, I'm currently connecting through AOL, and experiencing lots of packet loss, bad DNS resolution and general sluggishness.
My router & PC is configured correctly, and research tells me its just AOL being rubbish..

If there are  any other UK gamers out there that are happy with thier ISP package please feel free to recommend one to me.

Cheers,

F

I've been with Demon for over 5 years now and have never had a complaint. They cost a bitg more than some of the cheap deals out there but you get what you pay for at the end of the day  :D
P.S. Chicken and mushroom please and make it snappy!

Did have cable internet with virgin..was ok,  now with BT and no problems.

The thing is that most use BT to carry their lines anyway, so unless they have their own infrastructure or hardware, you might as well cut out the middle man imo.

Been with Virgin since they bought out NTL who bought out Diamond Media who I originally leased the line from.

For the same amount of money I payed for a 512kbit line to start with I now get 20mbit, it's reliable, faster than advertised most of the time and they only service it in the wee small hours of the morning when we're all asleep anyway.

If there's anything to complain about it's the customer service, Diamond media were great but NTL and Virgin both stink, when you call them for support they never know what's wrong and you spend half an hour explaining just to get put through to another department who still don't know.

Virgin are also in the internet news quite a lot for shady things their doing such as spying on us and planning to "edit" our internet use by controlling which sites we can visit, but personally I haven't experienced any problems with this.

Cheers chaps.. will have a look in to some of those.

DarkPand0r, what was your experience with BT? Most people seem to be happy with it, but i'd like to know any negatives that there might be.

@ Trav.. Pie's are in space gettin cooked by the sun in alexandria..  :P

One thing to complicate matters is the fact that my fiancee needs the free land line minutes she gets with AOL, so BT may yet be the best solution..
I've seen tiscali working ok for some people, but i think they have agressive QoS policies at peak times...

ps. whats wit all teh klingon snuffs yo'all ?? :P :P  :D

I wish I actually understood Klingon lol..but here's a test..try working out what this is.

HWÆT, WE GAR-DEna in geardagum,
þeodcyninga þrym gefrunon,
hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon!
oft Scyld Scefing sceaþena þreatum,
monegum mægþum meodosetla ofteah,
egsode eorlas, syððanærest wearð
feasceaft funden; he þæs frofre gebad,
weox under wolcnum weorðmyndum þah,
oð þæt him æghwylc ymbsittendra
ofer hronrade hyran scolde,
gomban gyldan; þæt wæs god cyning!
Ðæm eafera wæs æfter cenned
geong in geardum, þone God sende
folce to frofre; fyrenðearfe ongeat,
þe hie ær drugon aldorlease
lange hwile; him þæs Liffrea,
wuldres Wealdend woroldare forgeaf,
Beowulf wæs breme --- blæd wide sprang---
Scyldes eafera Scedelandum in.
Swa sceal geong guma gode gewyrcean,
fromum feohgiftumon fæder bearme,

Back on topic the cabled area thing is annoying I grant you but at least with cable you don't have to live within 3 km of an enabled exchange to get a decent speed...for example the cable terminator I'm currently hooked upto  is in Nottingham, which is 95 miles away from me!!
