Most of the fun of being a pirate isn't how much money you make anyway. It's not the amount of money, it's the idea that you are threatening the peace and stealing using threats or force (in the spirit of RP, or course). Look at all the pirates in all those movies, they aren't rich at all. They are doing it for the thrill of the chase.

If you want to be rich, being an [X] isn't for you. It's a lifestyle, not a career :).

Wish you the best of luck. As you know..piracy has always been close to my heart on my time on VOID, even back when I was leading a navy clan.

Glad only a few selected people know of my "second" life back then.

[quote="TheLaughingMan";p="217029"]Pirate life is almost impossible on Void

- another reason you have to be gangraped :I (same if you wear R tag or you are EVIL)

I feel like I should write some words to it, despite my previous intention not to do.

TBH, I found the people who don't pay much more fun. Try to become their personal nuisance (without breaking the server rules, of course!!!). Kill them when they don't expect it and when it annoys them the most. If they are in a clan- interfere in their wars the moment it's all on the edge. Being KOS to a clan should be a compliment for you! If all the lawfulls loathe (RP wise!!!) you and hunt you down on sight- *THEN* you have done a good job as a pirate.

If you mind being outnumbered, piracy is not for you. You need to be either fast (or smart) enough to get away when the big guns come after you...or you need to be man enough to fight them. And if they really get you- aknowledge it.

Unfortunately i have to argue with this post....

Leads to constant whining in game...Something nobody wants.

And if they really get you- aknowledge it.
How many players on the Void have ever acknowledged defeat?

C'mon guys lets just get to the point.
Piracy on void is dead until players take the ignorant stick from there ever so tightly wound anuses. Players are too ignorant and stubborn to pay 200k of their 200million because they feel it is wrong and they shouldn't have to RP unless its on their terms.
Pirates are just down right stupid and can't accept the above which originally lead to the Rogue role.

A Pirates role isn't to just cause utter chaos, thats a rogues job.

"A Pirates role isn't to just cause utter chaos, thats a rogues job."

-DarkPand0r

A long time back, the pirates were the rogues, they caused the chaos.
Therefore to say that, causing chaos is the sole monopoly of rogues is absurd.

Its been mentioned a number of times and this issue of "piracy being dead" has been discussed too many times,200k tax is  "symbolism".
Pirates, here in Void don't live on these taxes(and its foolish to think they can).
Pirates in Void live for the joy and fun which the spirit of piracy brings.
To be chased by navy,to fight long battles,to tax a trader and act like a fugitive-that is what piracy is about and not taxes.

The main source of income for 95% of pirates is NPC kiils or transferring money from their trader char to their pirate one.
Nearly 90% of all money that you have in a pirate char's account comes from non-loot sources.

Therefore, even if u say change the rule to 1mil from 200k it won't make any difference.(which is what Zeb has said)

A true pirate won't mind traders who refuse to pay tax,he will just kill the trader again and again(within rules) and then move to kill the navy.

@geromix your words are true.
But in addition, the rules and/or community seem to make a different approach to piracy impossible.
I know it's ancient history and no one cares about my ramblings...but my "original" pirate charackter target-drone was (after initial setup) only living by the money made by taxes and extortion. That only changed after a character wipe.

However, this required a more...lets say creative approach to piracy than just wait somewhere and type "tax 200k". That will get you nowhere- neither in getting rich or in having fun.
The highest "tax" I ever claimed *and received* was 100 millions. However, this was a little more complicated than the above example- i managed to be a major thorn in the side of the money-making process of an entire clan, making myself a major disturbance to them. The mentioned sum was transfered from the clan leader to me to leave his traders alone for a month...and *not* spoil their money source to anyone else.
Sadly, this would now not be possible anymore with the current rules, albeit I understand why the limit was introduced.

Additionally, this meant I had to cut costs somewhere- as a pirate, you should not set up a missile boat. Keep in mind- piracy is buissiness, after all.

cheers

Ok, my two cents worth here.

First and foremost: My being a pirate has NOTHING to do with taxes colletced! I CANNOT emphasize that enough. I am a pirate because I love being the one outside the law, the one who will stop people from moving if I can, the one who brings the spice into the game. Lets face it people, if you just wanted basic enemies, you would play vanilla or single playre against the NPC's. Multiplayer brings a whole new dimension to the game. REAL people with REAL skills challenging you and making you better in the process, an endless cycle of what if's.

PIRATES live to tax, not because we expect to be paid, but because our tax initiates a system of retalliation that we thrive one. Personally I would be bored senseless if everyone I taxed paid. I want the fight!

PIRATES do not whine when the "good" guys force them out of system, we welcome the attempt to make us do so.

PIRATES gain thier joy of the game from the above, and we hope that our role brings enjoyment to others as well so we can all enjoy the game as much as possible. Quit thinking of piracy as a way to make a living, and look at it as the role that it is. Good pirates can make a server very lively and fun just as bad pirates can ruin the game for all. It does take a certain mindset to be a pirate, but that mindset better be one about the fun of the role, not the profits.

Geromix:

A rogue originally (and i say originally cause a rogue's role has been distorted by lazy players) had several rules.
A rogue was never allowed to join any group or align with any sides, he was a total outsider and his main intent in life was to kill as many people as possible.
He/She (excuse my rudeness) was a total rogue in almost every spirit, he would trick players by stealing their money through transfers. He would abuse peoples sense of trust and generally cause utter chaos.
He is the middle man, He is a friend of no one and an enemy of all.

A pirate is the dark side, the bad guy who's intent is to be a badass.
They can side with anyone else they choose if it suits them and can group/allie with anyone but the good side.
He can choose who to be kind to, and who to abuse.

So you see, there is a major difference.
The difference on Void is that a Rogue is essentially a pirate......there is no actual point to a Rogue or Pirate if the other exist because due to players liking the tag they have seemingly lost the entire point of the rogue role.

Piracy can only survive if it is supported in roleplay.
Now my problem is we have no "police" or "pirates" right now, simply good and bad....
A few clans tried to stay in the middle (e.g. Marauders) but in the end they chose the good side for their own unselfish reasons (good on them).
I remember RAF came in as the hunters, trying to be the Anti-Pirate but were told their idea's for a "fine" to enter Police systems were stupid.

I don't think its the pirate RP thats dead, i think its the conventional FL roleplay is dead...

Thats the point
no RP just sides
my view is

R rouge = personal business ( does not mean you can't call for support if needed or you can support others if your goal is the same)
X pirate = organized crime
Evil = adrenalin hunter, law breaker, serve the chaos everywhere (best challenge), collaboration with other criminals, short the weak, absorber of law enforcers

@DarkPand0r-

Yes i agree that rogues and pirates have major differences but here in Void they have merged into each other.(Just as navy, hunters etc have become simply 'good' and then there is only 1 evil side)

There was a time....when this was not the case...'FL Roleplay' as u have put it was alive and kicking.

But those days have long gone by,due to lower number of players there has been great consolidation, with no clear cut distinct clan identities as RPs have simply merged.
If there were more players then you would have seen more RPs like Order,Navy divided into different houses maybe, hunters, evil, pirates, nomads etc.
Now we can't really expect the good ol'times to return and the server having 100+ players again, overnight.

My point regarding chaos was that earlier there used to be fewer rogues and pirates reigned supreme.
So pirates can make a comeback.

So we have as Becker here says-"Use Creative Approaches" to tax and go about.

As far as reviving piracy is concerned raising 200k tax limit won't make much of a difference.
But real change can come through changes in how trading goes about in Void.A lot of suggestions have been made already to improve trading.
The RP which immediately benefits from better trading is piracy.
Suggestions like having long trade routes, bigger transports, inflation, pirate ships with bigger cargo space,3D System changes/removal,  etc have been made.

It is hoped that some of these suggestions will be implemented in coming mod.

This is a great point - I've noticed that recently, with few exceptions, most fighting on the Void has been in Sparta.  A rogue or two will fly in there, or a few members of Black Legion (or maybe 666 or the Reavers) who are hanging out there will fight with all the Dacia, 4S, Orion, and ESF members who seem to like to hang out there too.  Either that, or everyone just hangs around and pvps.  I've seen players in the presence of RP enemies, just sitting there, not attacking anyone, which works just fine because nobody's attacking them either.

At the same time though, I've seen a few major battles start to break out outside Sparta - I think there was one in Colorado a couple of days ago.  But that could probably be attributed to the arrival of the HFC - I'm pretty sure that we could jumpstart RP here if at least one clan went out of its way to put the navy on their toes and start up some fights in places other than Sparta.  The HFC could definitely be that clan, as could the Black Legion with it's recent diplomacy changes.  And if more pirates spend more time actually doing piracy, then we're in good shape.  But the navy's going to have to step it up eventually.
We're making a list.
We're checking it twice.
We're gonna find out who's naughty or nice.
The I.S.B. is coming...to town.

I like this guy :P You know, I could replace "Pirates" with "Reavers" in that quote above and most of it would still hold true. Well, except the parts about taxing, but whatever, you get my point :P To be honest, I'm a purist in this regard: in my opinion, taxing is not piracy, it's extortion: piracy is about stealing stuff on the high seas :D Since traders don't drop all their cargo when shot, that isn't viable on the Void :( (And in all the times that I've tried demanding cargo from them, none have ever handed over any.) So, yeah. Sitting in Sparta has been a bad tendency on this server for quite some time, and it's boring. The only two things that can make life on the Void more interesting (and can make new people stay - because lots of them leave) are events organised by the event team, and clan wars, raids happening all over the place. Hey, I look forward to having a new clan to do that with then! :P Remember the events that ultimately ended in the huge NB war? That began by a couple of Reavers regularly raiding New Berlin. Hint hint ;)

PS: is there something wrong with my smileys? Those two aren't clapping :/
